Accredited Heavy Metals Testing for Compliance Decisions

Heavy metals enter food through soil, irrigation water, processing equipment, and packaging. Because they concentrate rather than degrade, a single contaminated ingredient lot can carry through an entire production run and into finished product on retail shelves.

Our heavy metals testing analyzes toxic elements and nutritional minerals by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) using AOAC and EPA reference methods held on our PJLA scope of accreditation. Results are issued on a Certificate of Analysis suitable for regulatory submission, customer specification files, and supplier qualification records.

Scope note: Elemental analysis is performed at our Houston, TX facility under PJLA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation (Accreditation No. 117946, Cert L26-535). It is accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 but is not included in our FDA LAAF-recognized scope. Our Harlingen, TX facility (Accreditation No. 126978) holds a separate scope that does not include elemental analysis; metals samples submitted to Harlingen are analyzed at Houston.

How Heavy Metals Testing Is Performed

From sample receipt to Certificate of Analysis, every batch runs under our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 quality system.

01. Digestion
First, solid food samples are homogenized and taken through microwave-assisted acid digestion (SOP 051, AOAC 2015.06) to bring the matrix fully into solution. Water samples are prepared by hot block digestion (SOP 047).

02. Detection
Next, digested samples are introduced to ICP-MS for simultaneous multi-element quantification. Potable water panels under EPA 200.7 run by ICP, and mercury under EPA 245.1 on a dedicated analyzer.
03. Quality Control
Then each analytical batch carries method blanks, calibration verification, and spike recovery checks, so results are traceable and defensible under accreditation.

Finally, results are issued on a Certificate of Analysis identifying the method, matrix, and reporting limits for each element, ready for regulatory files and customer specification packets.

Which heavy metals do you test under accreditation?
For food products and water, we hold accreditation for lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury under AOAC 2015.01, plus a mineral and trace element panel. Is your heavy metals testing FDA LAAF-recognized?
Our elemental analysis is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by PJLA, but it is not part of our FDA LAAF-recognized scope. Specifically, LAAF recognition applies to specific microbiological and chemical methods marked on our certificate. Therefore, if your submission requires a LAAF-recognized method, contact us before shipping and we will confirm whether the parameter you need is covered.
Can you test heavy metals in dietary supplements?
Yes. Supplement and botanical samples are analyzed as food products under our accredited food matrix methods. Simply tell us the product form and any specification limits you are testing against, and we will confirm the appropriate method and reporting limits.
How does heavy metals testing support Prop 65 compliance?
Proposition 65 requires a warning when exposure to a listed chemical exceeds the safe harbor level, and lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury are all listed. Consequently, quantified concentrations from an accredited laboratory, combined with your serving size data, are what determine whether a warning is required. How much sample do you need?
A minimum of 100 g (approximately 4 oz) of product is generally sufficient for elemental analysis. Water samples should be submitted in the containers and volumes specified on the sample submission form. However, if heavy metals are being run alongside microbiological or other chemical parameters, additional sample is required.
